A Little Bit of PKR History

Since its move onto the Microgaming Poker Network, PKR Poker has launched a lot of casino-based products and consequently the site primarily focuses on those. There are some network-wide leaderboard competitions to participate in and a stack of freeroll tournaments for players to develop their skills in; but, other than that, there is not a lot to write home about.
The exception to the above is the qualifiers for live poker events. PKR has a long tradition of hosting excellent live poker tournaments and often has online qualifiers for these, or seasonal events such as the World Series of Poker. The standard of play on PKR Poker (and the network in general) is not particularly strong, so it is worth keeping an eye open for these promotions if you want to qualify for a live poker event for a fraction of the buy-in.
Software: Poker Games and Tournaments
The poker games and tournaments available at PKR are pretty much what they were prior to the move to the network – there´s just more of them. There is quite a good deal of action at modest stakes if you like playing Texas Hold´em or Omaha, and the site also has its own fast-fold poker variant – Blaze Poker. You also have the option of playing poker anonymously at selected cash game tables.
Naturally the tournament schedule is much improved. The feature event is a monthly 'Masters' tournament guaranteed for €50,000, while there are decent events with guaranteed prize pools available during most European evenings and at the weekend. As many of the guaranteed tournaments are re-buy and add-on events, there is also a strong community playing Sit & Go games.
Software: PKR Poker Download
The PKR Poker download is compatible with the latest versions of Windows and Mac operating systems and there is also an Instant Play option for players with a shared computer or those who are content to access a low-res version of the software. The PKR Poker download effectively requires a 2Ghz processor (Lion 10.7 or above for Mac users), 2GB of RAM, 2GB of free space and a fairly good graphics card (I recommend DirectX 9 128MB or better for Windows and a VRAM 128MB or better video card to play PKR Poker on a Mac).
If you have never experienced the full download of PKR Poker, it is a little bit special. Everybody should experience playing on the site at least once in their lives, if only to find out what all the fuss is about. As mentioned above, the site does seem to attract plenty of players with more technical skills than poker skills, so the standard of play is not that great at all levels except the very highest.
Software: PKR Poker on a Mobile
A PKR-Lite version of the software is available for players who enjoy their poker on the go. At present the software only supports the fast-fold Blaze games of Texas Hold´em poker, but plans are being made up in PKR Towers to introduce cash games, Sit & Go games and multi table tournaments in the near future.
PKR Poker on a mobile is available for both Android (Jellybean 4.1+ allegedly) and iOS 5.1 or later (the iOS app is only available in the UK, Sweden, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands). Whichever device you use, it should have 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, 570Mb of free space and a 3D capable GPU graphics card. PKR also has a decent mobile casino app available for download.
Security: Banking
Players have the choice of a web-based cashier or the secure cashier in the poker client when depositing into their accounts. The deposit options generally include credit and debit cards, PayPal, Skrill and Neteller, PaySafeCard and Bank Transfer, and you will be advised of any other deposit options that exist for your country of residence when you open the cashier´s page. There are no fees attached to funding a PKR Poker account, and the minimum deposit is just $/€/£10.00.
As the site has a license to operate in the UK, PKR Poker has to comply with the standards stipulated by the UK Gambling Commission. These include the guaranteed security of player funds and the processing of withdrawals within a reasonable timeframe. Withdrawals are usually returned to the payment source used to make a deposit and limited to one free withdrawal per seven days up to a maximum of €2,000 per withdrawal (thereafter a 2% fee applies).
Security: Currency Conversions
PKR Poker allows players to create an online account in either US dollars, Euros or £ sterling. This does not affect the amount of PKR bonus you are entitled to, as the PKR bonus is 200% up to €1,000 or currency equivalent. Games of poker and buy-ins to tournaments are all advertised in Euros (even though VIP Points are awarded in dollars), but whatever currency you hold your account in, the same exchange rate will be applied when you stand up from a table as when you joined it.
Ideally you should maintain your PKR Poker account in the same currency as your funding source. PKR operates a fair policy when it comes to dealing in mixed currencies and will not charge you for currency conversions or add a premium to the exchange rate, but your bank or e-Wallet provider is likely to definitely will.

PKR Poker has a fairly comprehensive help section on its website, but also offers great customer support via live chat and email. I would advise against using the Live Chat facility to discuss lost or forgotten passwords (one of the options on the menu) and am a little bit surprised that the site does not offer the option of 'chatting' directly with somebody in technical support. However, the general standard of knowledge is pretty good.
PKR Poker is also very tight on security. The help section explains a great deal about the efforts the site makes to keep the games fair and enjoyable for everyone. It also has a Responsible Gambling policy that requires every player to verify their account within 72 hours of making a deposit or else the account will be suspended. Although I would recommend verifying an account as soon as you have created it (for your own security), top marks to PKR Poker for insisting on verification at an early stage.
My Experience of Playing at PKR Poker
My experience of playing at PKR Poker is a bit of a mixed bag. For me, the novelty value of the 3D graphics wore off in 2007 and although the minimum computer system requirements have doubled since the site joined the Microgaming Poker Network, I don´t see double the improvement in the software. I think that the PKR Bonus is unclear for new players and the promotions are nothing special unless you want to play in live poker events.
On the plus side, it is pretty easy to reach a worthwhile stage in the PKR Poker VIP Club because of the way in which the Club is structured. There is enough variety in the tournament schedule to keep me interested (and enough freezeouts to prevent me from complaining) and the cash game tables are beatable if you have a decent amount of skill. Overall, whether or not you enjoy PKR Poker will be down to your personal preferences. I do believe however, that PKR Poker is a site everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Online Poker and Mobile Poker have gotten faster and faster in the last couple of years. Most of the big poker rooms were making every effort to kill boredom by introducing fast fold clients or super-quick jackpot Sit & Gos. PKR Poker went a different way. The Alderney-based poker room invented the probably most beautiful real money poker software. Meanwhile the PKR 3D-Poker Software has gone mobile. Read our full review to find out if the PKR mobile Poker App for Android, iPhone and iPad is as good as the desktop software.
Before we get started, let's take a quick look at the availability of the different versions. If you are just looking for a download link. these will help you out:
- The PKR Android App is available in a 3D and a 2D version. You can find the latest version here at PKR. Simply register for a new account and download the apk
- The PKR mobile Poker App for iPhone and iPad is also available in a 3D and a 2D version. But the 3D version has not been released in every country yet. Register at PKR and follow the download-link to the Appstore. If the 3D version is not available on iTunes, you can still download the 2D version which has all the same functionalities except the 3D animations and gestures
What makes the PKR mobile Poker App so special?
Once difference at first sight: PKR has spent a lot of effort in the looks of its poker client.
If you have already seen some real money poker apps, a quick look at the screenshot above will be enough to know, where PKR mobile Poker makes a difference: Unlike other real money poker apps it is available in 3D. While other operators try to make the mobile poker game quicker, PKR has tried to make it more social. On top of the nice looks the PKR poker app allows you to interact with your opponents. There is not only a chat. There are also emotes that can be activated with a fingertip. Your avatar will perform a certain gesture – for example a happy dance after winning a big pot.
This social component might be less attractive to professional players. But it is very attracting to players who want some fun rather than to do poker business. With the emotes available and the other virtual 3D avatars sitting right in front of you, the mobile poker game comes much closer to a real poker experience than the static 2D top-view. PKR mobile Poker is a little bit like an online RPG, where you can perform your character and even earn some virtual items for your avatar. PKR Poker and the PKR App are beginner friendly and perfect for recreational players. Therefore, we added PKR to our mobile poker for beginners listing.
So much for now – let's get started with the full review:
Availability
As mentioned above, we need to differentiate between the 3D and the 2D version of the PKR Poker App. In the UK both are available for iPhone, iPad and Android. In many other countries, the PKR mobile 3D version is only available for Android. If you have an android tablet or android phone, you can register here at PKR and will be redirected to the download section for your device.
However, if you own an iOS device, you might still be among the lucky ones. Follow this link to PKR and register. You will then see an Appstore download link. If it brings you to the PKR 3D Poker App in iTunes, you can use both versions. If it doesn't, you can still download the 2D Poker App which is a good choice, too. In fact, the 2D version of PKR does even have some advantages: it is far smaller and you can download it on the go, using your 3G or LTE connection (be aware of the bandwith, though). The 3D Poker App is hundreds of MBytes heavy and should only be downloaded via Wifi, unless you have a lot of data volume available.
Blackberry and Windows Phone users will have to check for anotherApp. PKR is not available as and html5-based Web-App.

Both of the PKR Bonus offers are only available on your first deposit. They come with freeroll-tickets and some club PKR bonus points and a status upgrade. 'Club PKR' is the loyality program at PKR. While playing real money poker you collect points that can be traded for gifts, VIP-hospitality and more. What exactly can you get for the points? PKR doesn't really make that transparent, so we have to deduct some points in our rating. The 1% steps in which the 200% bonus is cleared, are very fair however. The 60 days you have for clearing the bonus are common.

Functionality and stability of the App
Did we already mention that we have to differentiate between the 2D and 3D App? I think we did, so we will not waste any more words on this and stick to the 2D App, as it offers most of the functionality, too.
A big pro is the number of games available at PKR mobile. PKR is one of the pretty rare Poker Apps offering real money Pot Limit Omaha on a mobile device. Texas Hold'em players find a nice variety as well: PKR does not stick to No Limit Hold'em but also offers Limit Texas Hold'em Poker on top of it. Cash-games, Sit and Go and tournaments are available. A fast fold client is missing, however.

Once you have chosen your game, it is time to choose your table. PKR has decided to display the tables in a small preview. The white buttons symbolize an active player. As the number of tables is quite low, this view works pretty well.

Sitting at the table you see the user interface for the first time. In the lower third of the screen you will see a chat and some table and chat options. This area completely changes when its your turn to make a bet. You are now offered a variety of buttons to check, fold or raise. Its up to you whether you prefer the bet slider or the pot-size-buttons to determine the right amount. We must admit, that we like this setup pretty much.
The user-interface
In the menu on the top left there are even more options to (de-)activate. Here you can toggle the sound effects or the 4-color-deck.

Last but not least: If you have taken a close look at the screenshot below, you might havee seen a great feature already: The PKR mobile poker app offers multitabling. You can play at up to four tables at a time, as seen on the screenshot above. The table-icon with the info-button above it is the one you are looking at. By tapping on the other icons, you can switch tables.
Multitabling is a rare and great feature on mobile devices. Too bad: the way PKR has designed the multitabling feature is not optimal. The App does not switch tables automatically if your action is required, but shows a light-grey bar within the icon on top. We had to concentrate a lot in order not to miss our turn. And once you change the table, you have to search for your seat – or you better place yourself in the same position at every table.
To sum it up: PKR mobile Poker for Android, iPhone and iPad is an app with many features. Some are still missing though. And some of the existing ones are lacking a good design. Therefore we credit the PKR App…

Appearance
The looks of the mobile version of PKR Poker is simply great. Even the 2D App is designed with passion for detail (take a look at the chip-stacks – they're real stacks and not just numbers). The 3D App is even better, beeing the only real money poker app that offers 3D graphics and animations for mobile devices.

Gameplay and number of players
PKR Poker is a small and independent network – and with fewer players then elsewhere and a fast fold client missing, it is sometimes difficult to find an active table within your range. Especially at higher levels and outside the primetime-hours, you might have problems finding a table. At micro-stages, however, you will always find someone to play with. And with the multitabling feature available, gameplay can still be pretty fast.

Opponents Level
PKR focuses on recreational players and beginners. And this is what you will mostly face when sitting at the PKR Poker tables. If you are looking for some quick poker fun, PKR is a good choice. But be aware: There could still be some better players, looking for easy meat.
If you play poker regularly, the PKR Software is still a good choice. The 2D mobile App might even suit you better. PKR mobile Poker offers a large variety of games, a really good and stable software (we did not encounter a single crash during our tests) and a good user interface:
